What is Commercial General Liability Insurance?

Commercial General Liability (CGL) Insurance is considered comprehensive and essential business insurance coverage. It covers liability claims for bodily injury (BI), personal injury, and property damage (PD) caused by your business operations, products, and employees. The CGL policy will also cover the legal costs involved in a lawsuit. However, unlike Professional Liability or E&O, it only covers non-professional negligent acts.

Why do I need Commercial General Liability Insurance?

Having the right insurance coverage for your business is essential to the productivity and livelihood of the company. Damages from liability claims can be expensive and devastating without proper protection.

If a legal claim is made against you, Commercial General Liability Insurance covers legal expenses including litigation, out-of-court settlements, as well as costs relating to personal and advertising injury and third party property damage. Should you require extra coverage that are not within the scope of CGL, we can also include additional liability coverage.

What does Commercial General Liability Insurance cover?

Standard Commercial General Liability Insurance provides the following coverage:

  • Bodily Injury and Property Damage: Protects you from financial losses arising from third-party injury or damage claims resulting from your business operations.
  • Personal and Advertising Injury: This coverage includes protection against liability due to false advertising, libel, slander, copyright infringement, or malicious prosecution.
  • Medical Payments: Provides coverage for non-employee in case of an accident on your premises or due to your business. Payments include medical, surgical, and other hospital expenses on a no-fault basis.
  • Product Liability: You are covered if your products cause property or bodily injury.

General aggregate limit is the maximum allowable limit an insurance policy will pay during the entire policy term. General aggregate limit is usually higher than per occurrence limit, but can be equal in situations where insurers want to restrict the number of covered incidents. Common aggregate limits are $1,000,000, $2,000,000, and $5,000,000.

Contractual liability protects the party signing an agreement/contract from liabilities by transferring the risk from them to another party (insurer). Contractual liability is automatically included as a part of CGL, covering third-party damages and injuries and related claims.
